Pryor’s Madison Burroughs – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Rhett Minson State Farm

By Derrick Smith

Madison Burroughs has spent most of her life playing sports. She began playing basketball and softball when she was six years old and she currently plays both for the Lady Tigers of Pryor. She says that she has put in a lot of work but says you have to go above and beyond if you want to be the best.

“Practicing on my own has played a huge part in being successful in sports,” she said. “Coaches can’t give you enough practice in just a few hours so practicing on your own time is so important.”

Burroughs is a senior at Pryor High School. She plays shooting guard on the hardwood, while on the softball field, she plays shortstop.

Throughout her life, Madison has had people that have played a role in her life. But she says that there is one person that has made the biggest impact on her.

“My mom is my biggest role model,” she stated. “She has taught me through her own work ethic to work hard and always do the best I can.”

The head coach of the Pryor girls basketball team, Donnie Martin, says that Burroughs is a tough kid and a strong competitor.

“Despite facing a lot of adversity, Madison has persevered,” he said. “She brings energy, speed, and toughness to our team. She averaged eight points and three rebounds last season, but I think she will make a bigger impact this season.”

As a student at Pryor, Burroughs has sat through the classes of many teachers, but she says that there is one teacher that had a big influence on her.

“My favorite teacher would be Ms. Heiderschiet,” she said. When I would get down on myself and feel no hope, she always believed in me and said I can do whatever I put my mind to.”

Along with playing sports, Madison is also involved in various groups and clubs. She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the National Honor Society. She is also studying Cosmetology at Northeast Tech.
