Salina Wildcats Wrestling Preview – Presented by Hooker’s Sports Grill

The Wildcats enter the 2021-22 season after a great showing at the state tournament last season under the leadership of coach Matt Simmons. The Wildcats finished tied for fourth place in the team standings and several wrestlers made their way to the podium

Hunter Fitzpatrick returns for his senior season after a great year as a junior. Fitzpatrick wrestled at 120-pounds last year and finished with a record of 27-7. He defeated Kaden Smith of Bridge Creek in the finals to claim his state championship and etch his name in the record books forever. Fitzpatrick is certainly one of the favorites to repeat this season.

Another wrestler who made people take notice at the state tournament was Gavin Montgomery. Montgomery wrestled at 132-pounds and finished the season on top of Class 3A as a state champion after defeating Dylan Henson of Vinita in the finals. Montgomery finished his sophomore campaign with a record of 25-5.

Jack Wilkins had the most wins of the state tournament wrestlers at 30-6 and finished in the runner-up spot at 152-pounds. Wilkins is expected to have a great season this year for the Wildcats. His runner-up finish should fuel his season making him hungry for that title.

State qualifier Gaige Stock wrestled at 106-pounds last year and is looking to make his presence felt this year. Stock has the potential to return to state and find his way to the podium.

Other teams in the class who will be tough to beat at state are Marlow, Jay, and Blackwell – the usual suspects in Class 3A wrestling.
