Salina’s LiLee Sanders – Athlete Spotlight Presented by Red Crown Credit Union

Role models can play a big role in the lives of most young people. Whether they look up to a celebrity or someone that is closer to them, the impact that these people have on them can be enough to shape the young person’s life. LiLee Sanders says that she has had a few people that have been the biggest influences on her life.

“My dad, Nana, and Aunt Maria would have to be my biggest role models,” she stated. “They have always been there for me and pushed me to be my best and better my abilities. There is one professional athlete that I look up to and that is Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs. He is an outstanding quarterback plus he is really good-looking.”

As a freshman at Salina High School, Sanders is a member of the basketball and track teams. She plays the post position on the basketball court, while as a member of the track team she throws the shot put. LiLee says that while both sports require different skills, the success she has enjoyed comes from the same place.

“Putting in a lot of practice is the most important,” she said. “Even practicing at home or when there is not an organized team practice will be a big help. You also have to have confidence when you are in the competition. Trust yourself and know that you can do what you have trained to do.”

Throughout her career, Sanders has had moments that stand out among all the rest. She also says that she has a couple of opponents that she enjoys going up against.

“Beating Adair in basketball was a great feeling,” she said. “And throwing a 34.8 at Coweta is something I won’t forget. I like to go against a Westville girl because she beat me at the Miami track meet. And also Adair because they have never believed I am the age and grade I am.”
