Bartlesville Volleyball Character Counts – Kelsey Ward – Presented by Arvest Bank

Junior outside hitter for the Bartlesville Lady Bruins, Kelsey Ward, loves to compete. Whether it is on the court or in the classroom Ward is always going to give it her all. Ward first began playing volleyball in junior high and loved the game ever since.

“I first started playing in the seventh grade,” Ward said. “My favorite aspect of the sport is just attacking in general because there is no other feeling like getting up and cranking on a ball!”

Ward appreciates the bonds that she has formed with her coaches and teammates over the years. As with any team sport, volleyball requires unity, communication, and a willingness to work together.

“Some qualities that I think make a good teammate is putting others before yourself,” Ward said. “Also, always be encouraging.”

Ward helps demonstrate that the most successful teams are the ones that work together, rather than focusing on individual accomplishments.

While Ward is focused on the volleyball season, she is also taking her academics seriously. Ward has set some objectives for herself this year.

“Some of my goals this year are just continuing my progression in volleyball and getting the most out of the game,” Ward said. “Academically – getting a high score on my ACT and passing my AP exams in the spring.”

Outside of athletics and the classroom Ward often turns to her family for support and advice.

“My mom is my number one role model,” Ward said. “She always sets a good example and has taught me so much in my life that I will carry forever.”

Looking ahead throughout the rest of the volleyball season Ward is looking forward to the opportunities to bond with her friends on the team.

“I am very excited to play in the Southmoore tournament this year,” Ward said. “We get to stay overnight and it will be so much fun to spend the weekend with my teammates.”

Getting a jump start on life after high school Ward is already working toward her future by taking AP classes in preparation for college.

“Currently I am planning to go to college and major in pre-med,” Ward said.
