GIRLS
Coach: Deric Longan
21-22 Record: 19-7
The Caney Valley Lady Trojans advanced to the Class 2A Regionals last year, but fell short of their goal of the state tournament.
Head coach Deric Longan likes the makeup of his squad as they head into this new season.
“We are an experienced group of juniors and seniors,” Longan said. “We will look to utilize our good team size and speed to our advantage.”
Sammi Gilbreath (5-10, Sr.) is a versatile athlete who can play inside or out. She shoots a solid percentage from all over the floor and is one of the team’s top rebounders. Last season she averaged 10 points per game and will look to continue to be a force at both ends of the court.
Another senior leader on the team is point guard Jade Upton (5-8, Sr.). She was named both the team and conference Most Valuable Player last season. She is a great floor general and a talented scorer. Upton also does an outstanding job of setting the tone for the team on the defensive end.
Senior forward MJ Hines (5-8, Sr.) has invested a lot of time and effort in the offseason to prepare herself for this season and she should be an impact player for the team.
Playing center will be Chloe Scherman (6-0, Jr.), who averaged 3.2 blocker per game last season. She will be problematic for an opponent to both defend and score against.
Libby Thompson (5-9, Jr.) and Amaya Toftee (5-6, Jr.) will both be playing guard and try to have some influence on the game and have their presence felt on the court.
Other Lady Trojans to keep an eye on this season are forward Kensly Foreman (5-6, Jr.), shooting guard Myah Edwards (5-5, Jr.), and forward Emma Gray (5-5, Jr.).
