Oklahoma Union Cougars 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Welch State Bank

OKLAHOMA UNION COUGARS

Coach: STEVEN TRAMMELL

0-10

OFFENSE

The Oklahoma Union Cougars had a rough season last year. And while they have a good number of underclassmen on the roster, fifth-year head coach Steven Trammell says he is looking forward to this season. “We are still young this year,” he said. “But I think that this team should improve nicely over the next two seasons.” Leading the offense at quarterback will be Connor Pierce (6-0, 180, Jr.). He is a solid leader on and off the field and will help guide the offense to success. Joining him in the backfield will be the running back duo of Isaiah Johnson (5-6, 150, Sr.) and Waylon Miner (5-8, 145, Jr.). These two backs will work hard to find the open running lanes and get into open space. Offensive linemen Caelan Lopez (5-10, 170, Sr.) and James Garoutte (5-9, 240, Sr.) are going to anchor the offensive line and try to keep the defense out of the backfield.

DEFENSE

The defense will be led by a solid group of linebackers. Grant Reeves (5-9, 165, Jr.), Jacob Harris (5-9, 165, Jr.), and Jace Buckley (5-10, 170, Fr.) have put in a lot of work over the summer and will look to make an impact on the field. Buckley is a physical and dynamic presence on and off the field, he will play a major role in the team’s success. Harris comes from a strongly rooted family. Last year he played multiple positions on both sides of the ball. As a tweener, he never questions the role the staff gives him. He just wants to make plays. Cornerback Bodee West (5-7, 150, Jr.) and safety Tagg Bond (5-9, 160, Jr.) will patrol the secondary and try to keep the opponent’s big plays to a minimum. Assistant coaches this season will be Offensive Coordinator Cordell Jackson and Special Teams Coordinator Logan Bernard.
