Claremore Softball Character Counts – Grace Weaver – Presented by Red Crown Credit Union

Claremore sophomore Grace Weaver plays catcher and third base for the Lady Zebra softball team. For Weaver softball has been a lifelong passion and has been a way for her to grow closer with her mom by sharing their love of the game together.

“I started softball when I was four years old,” Weaver said. “My mom’s love for the game was my biggest inspiration to start.”

Over the years softball has been an integral part of Weaver’s life. It provides an opportunity for her to bond with friends and family both on and off the field. However, at heart, Weaver is a competitor and there is nothing she enjoys more than making plays on the diamond. Weaver lives for the high pressure moments.

“My favorite aspect of the sport is competing in tough situations,” Weaver said.

While only a sophomore, Weaver knows what it takes to be successful on the field, and how to be a good teammate.

“The best qualities to have to be successful with softball is to have a strong work ethic and be confident,” Weaver said.

One person Weaver has looked up to for inspiration is former OU Sooner and All American Lauren Chamberlain. Chamberlain holds the record for Division I career slugging percentage and is the current commissioner of the WPF (Women’s Professional Fastpitch). Chamberlain serves as a good role model for young athletes and demonstrates how young women can turn their passions into careers.

“Lauren Chamberlain has been my biggest role model since I can remember,” Weaver said.

While Weaver loves to compete in softball she also appreciates the moments she gets to spend off the field and having fun with her teammates.

“My favorite memory from this season is the pregame bus rides with my teammates,” Weaver said.

As Weaver continues her softball career she is always setting new goals for herself and working hard to accomplish them. Weaver can usually be found in the gym during the offseason working out to improve her game. She said she typically focuses on her strength.

“I set a goal until I achieve it,” Weaver said. “Then I make a new one.”

One goal Weaver has set for the future is still a few years away, but she is already working hard to make it happen. Weaver said her plan is to play softball at the collegiate level.
