OFFENSE
After two years of deep playoff runs for the Hornets, Colcord will be looking to find some help in the skill positions for the 2022 season. They return seven starters on the offense but three of them are linemen in Sawyer Sherrell (6-3, 290, Sr.), Tony Perez (6-0, 265, Jr.), and Caleb Skidgel (5-8, 220, Sr.). Those guys will be doing their best to protect quarterback Gabe Winfield (5-11, 175, Jr.), a three-sport athlete, who head coach Austin Martin calls a hard worker, leader and good teammate. His favorite receiver will probably be big-bodied tight end Eyan Williams (6-3, 215, Sr.) along with youngster Manuel Bocanegra (6-0, 165, So.). “Eyan is a great team leader and excels in the classroom as well with a 29 ACT score,” said Martin. Asaskey Pendry (5-9, 225, Jr.) will move from the defense to take over the running back duties for the Hornets this year.
DEFENSE
Williams will be at the heart of Colcord’s 3-4 defense as he returns to his linebacker spot. His senior leadership will be vital at linebacker with junior Treyden Larmon (6-3, 215) and a pair of sophomores in Cooper Mott (6-0, 200) and Cade Linn (5-10, 185) that he will be mentoring as linebackers. The defensive front could be a question mark with sophomore Khaleeal Penn listed as the only notable at defensive end so you might expect to see Sherrell, Perez and/or Skidgel show up on that side of the ball as well. Winfield will again man a safety spot and he’ll be joined at cornerback by Jesse Martinez (5-7, 165, Sr.). The Hornets will also face some major district reshuffling this year as they move from District A-8 to A-7 with the only other carryover being Hulbert. The new opponents facing Colcord will be Ketchum, Quapaw, Commerce, Wyandotte, Fairland and Afton.
