Pryor Tigers 2023 Softball Team Preview – Presented by Rhett Minson – State Farm

PRYOR TIGERS

Coach: CHELL LOONEY

OUTLOOK

Pryor will be expected to make another strong push in Class 5A under head coach Chell Looney in 2023. The Tigers return five starters, including dominant pitcher Brooklynn Stohler. “This is a great group to work with every day. We have set high expectations and goals and will work hard every day to reach them,” Looney said. “This year’s schedule is pretty tough to prepare us for the playoffs.” Pryor went 28-12 last year and advanced to the state tournament. Stohler, a Pittsburg State commit, will be in her fourth-year as a starting pitcher. She recorded 338 strikeouts in 181 innings and posted an 0.87 earned run average as a junior. The VYPE Top 100 nominee is also disruptive at the plate where she hit .422 with four home runs and had a .510 on-base percentage in 2022. Senior Adriana Donnelly will be in her third year as a starter. Donnelly, who can play a number of positions but spent most of her time at first base last year, hit .376 with a .482 on-base percentage and 33 runs scored in 2022. “Adriana is a true utility player. She has started for two seasons and has played a different position every season,” Looney said. “She is a good leader and is very reliable.” Looney is counting on productivity from incoming freshman shortstop McKenna Yancey. “[McKenna] is expected to start at shortstop and play a big part on offense as well,” he said. “She is an above average athlete with good speed and a great arm. We are excited to see her play for the next four years.”

Sophomore Akiya Tsosie returns as a starter at second base. “[Akiya]is solid in the field and also good at the plate. She is a hard worker and very easy to coach,” Looney said. “She isn’t loud or flashy, but does her job very well.” Like Tsosie, third baseman Kenzi Bennett also started as a freshman in 2022. “Kenzi is a hard worker that is always spending extra time in the cage or taking ground balls,” Looney said. “We are expecting great things out of her this season. She is very reliable and leads by example. She is another fun player to watch and coach.” Joining Stohler and Donnelly as seniors are outfielder/corner infielder Arystan Buchanan, and outfielders Samantha Saucedo and Kayda Wolfe. Juniors expected to play roles are outfielder/middle infielder Chloe Brown, corner infielder Sydney Kingfisher and pitcher/corner infielder Elli Price, who was a starter last season. Other sophomores include outfielders Aaliyah Banuelos and Brooklyn Keenan, and middle infielder Olivia Randleman. Pitcher/corner infielder Coda Taylor, catcher/corner infielder Lillian Moore and catcher/outfielder Chloe Brown.
