Jay High School
In his first season competing in track for Jay High School, Orion Tsosie is turning heads and putting in outstanding performances.
Tsosie is competing in several events and is enjoying the opportunity to represent his school and compete with his friends.
“This year I am competing in the 4×800 relay, 2-mile, and the 1-mile events,” said Tsosie. “I like the 2-mile run, this season my best finish is a 5:14 in the mile run.”
The longer distance races come more natural for Tsosie who also competes in cross country in the fall. Making the move over to the track team has helped Jay HS finish higher in the team standings on the boy’s side. Tsosie said the team wants to compete at the state track meet.
“The goal is to make the state meet. We all need to come together as one and have a mindset of winning,” said Tsosie.
That goal is reachable this season as several Jay track members have enjoyed solid seasons and could be qualifiers at the end of the season. Tsosie said he believes teammates like Armando Newcomb and Kreed Culver are two reasons why the track team has a shot at state. Others like Krew Culver and Kasen Jones are crucial to the team’s success.
“In my opinion I am the funniest on the team and someone that serious is Krew Culver,” said Tsosie.
While success comes at a price, Tsosie believes their hard work will pay off. But being on the team and being around his peers is about more than simply winning races.
“As a JHS student I enjoy our new track and having fun socializing,” said Tsosie.
As for his plans after high school? Tsosie may have found his niche and could take his talents to the next level. “After high school I would like to try to run cross country or track and field in college, while pursuing a degree,” said Tsosie.
