Pryor’s Ashlynn Vargas – athlete spotlight presented by red crown credit union

By Derrick Smith

Everyone wants to be successful in their life. Whether it is in sports, work, family, or life in general. While the definition of success may be different in each category, the fact that it takes work and effort is the same. Ashlynn Vargas knows what it has taken for her to get to where she is today.

“First of all, I am very competitive,” she stated. “I always give 110 percent whether it’s in practice or a game.  Another big plus is having the best teammates and coaches who challenge and inspire me to be my best.”

Vargas is a sophomore at Pryor High School. She is a multi-sport athlete for the Lady Tigers, playing both basketball and soccer. On the basketball court, Ashlynn plays guard, while on the soccer field, she plays forward. Vargas has been playing both sports since she was young. Over that span of time, Vargas had had some memorable moments, but she says that there is one that is probably her favorite.

“I think the highlight of basketball has to be when we won the conference tournament in the seventh grade,” she recalled. “We had so much fun that year! Not just winning the tournament but also winning it with my teammates was great. The highlight of my soccer career would have to be when I got my first hat trick in a varsity game. They were both really great for me.”

While Ashlynn has had a few people that have had an influence on her life, she says that there are a couple of people that have made a bigger difference.

“One of my biggest role models is my sister Abbigayle,” she said. “She always pushes me to do my best no matter what it is.  If it’s showing cattle, riding horses or playing soccer. Another would have to be my seventh-grade science teacher, Mrs. Soap. She was a fun teacher that made learning fun.”

Along with sports, Vargas is also a member of the National Honor Society, Indian Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Tiger Video. She is also very active in the Future Farmers of America Program.

“I am currently chapter treasurer,” she stated. “I also show cattle, participate in cattle grading, community service. and a speech contest.”
