Vinita’s Jayt Collins – athlete spotlight presented by Oklahoma AgCredit Vinita

The eighth grade is when many students get involved in FFA. Vinita High School’s Jayt Collins is no different.

“I first got involved in FFA when I was in eighth grade,” said Collins. “My whole family got me involved and encouraged me to be in FFA because they were involved in FFA and agriculture is such a part of our life.”

Growing up in a family with a history of being involved in FFA made it a natural move for Collins and showing animals would certainly be a part of the experience.

“I currently show pigs and have also shown cattle in the past,” said Collins. “Within our chapter I am involved in livestock judging, cattle grading, showing livestock, and the skeet shooting team.”

His favorite thing about FFA has more to do with the people than the animals.

“My favorite part of being in FFA is getting to travel to different places and getting to meet new people,” said Collins.

Currently a sophomore at Vinita High School, Collins is on the Hornets’ baseball team.

“I am also a member of the varsity baseball team where I rotate between second base and catcher,” said Collins. “I grew up playing catcher and continued to play there my freshman year. This year I am transitioning to second base. I love being part of my team, the brotherhood that we have, and the fun we have on and off the field.”

Collins said his grandparents and parents have been big influences in his life as well as his pastor and youth pastor. His future plans include college and possibly working the family business.

“After graduation I plan to attend college to be a mortician and then return home to help my uncle with his funeral business or attend pharmacy school,” said Collins.

He offers this advice to other students who are considering joining the FFA.

“The best advice I could give someone wanting to join FFA would be, don’t be afraid to work, and be ready to be put out of your comfort zone because it’s going to happen,” said Collins.
