Abby Casey is currently a senior at Sequoyah Claremore High School and a member of the FFA chapter where she has shown livestock, competed in public speaking and is currently a chapter officer. Casey started her FFA journey when she was a freshman in 2017.
“I do not currently show any animals, but I showed sheep both my sophomore and junior years of high school and in the Fall of 2020, I showed my first pig. I plan on showing two pigs this coming Fall at both my local county fair and the Tulsa State Fair,” said Casey.
Being a member of the FFA chapter at Sequoyah has taught her a lot about hard work and being responsible.
“Being in FFA has taught me more than any organization or school activity ever has before. It has taught me how to work hard, and to most importantly be responsible and independent. My years of competing in speech competitions and showing livestock has really made me grow and become the best version of myself. I wouldn’t trade FFA for the world,” said Casey. “There are so many things that I love about FFA, but the one part that I would say that I love the most is the people that I met. Before I joined, I had never dreamed that I could meet another or better group of people that I did at that time. Looking back, I realize that I made the best decision becoming an FFA member because more than anything, my friends in this organization changed me for the better.”
Casey plans to attend college after she graduates and eventually work in the medical field.
“After I graduate, I plan to attend Rogers State University and pursue a career as an Occupational Therapist. Teaching children and seeing them progress is something that I really have taken in interest in these past couple of years. This summer I want to intern for a few local OTs and get a few experiences in before I start college. I hope to stay fairly close to my family and raise a family of my own one day,” said Casey.
Casey said anyone involved in FFA knows how much fun it is and to stick with it.
“The best advice I could give to a fellow member is to stay involved. Find what you love to do, whether it’s showing, speaking, judging, or anything in between, go for it! Even if you try something out and don’t like it, that’s what’s so great about FFA because there are so many options. There’s also plenty of people in the AG community that would love to help get you started. Have confidence, and don’t give up. You won’t regret it,” said Casey.
Away from the hustle of school and FFA, Casey said she enjoys spending time with family.
“In my free time, I really enjoy writing and spending time with my family. These days free time can sometimes be hard to find, so when I do have some, I try to fill it with as many relaxing things as possible. Watching The Office, eating ice cream, and writing in my journal have been my favorite ways to wind down lately,” said Casey.
