Welch’s Lydia Armstrong – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Northeast Tech

By Derrick Smith

Self-esteem is a big motivator for many people. If someone feels good about themselves, chances are they will be more productive and successful. Lydia Armstrong knows that this aspect can make an impact on people and that is something that has helped her decide on her future career path.

While she is a junior at Welch High School, Armstrong also attends Northeast Tech. She is in the Cosmetology program and says that this is giving her a head start for her future plans.

“I first learned about Northeast Tech when I was in the eighth grade and we went on a tour,” she said. “I enjoy fixing hair and painting fingernails while also making people feel good about themselves. After I graduate, I want to go to work as an esthetician and I feel that Tech has prepared me to be very successful in the cosmetology industry.”

Armstrong knows the benefits that Northeast Tech has given to her by allowing her to begin her career while still in high school. She says that it will do the same for anyone else that is considering it.

“I would highly recommend Northeast Tech to anyone,” she stated. “It is a great learning atmosphere where you can learn about your specific trade while still having fun.”

Armstrong is a multisport athlete at Welch High School. She plays fastpitch softball, slowpitch softball, basketball, cheer, and track. Armstrong is also a member of the National Honor Society.

Over her athletic career, she has made a lot of memories with her teammates.

“My favorite memory is when we won districts,” she stated. “The district championship game lasted for four hours and it was close the entire game. I also love spending time with my team and hearing the crowd cheer, showing their support for us.”

There are people that have made impacts on Armstrong’s life, but out of all of them, she says that there are two who stand out the most.

“My parents would have to be the biggest role models in my life,” she stated. “They are always encouraging me to work hard and always do my best. I am grateful for both of them.”
