Shane Douthit is a junior at Miami High School and multisport athlete for the Wardogs. For Douthit, playing sports and being a contributing member of a team has always been a driving force in his life.
Douthit likes to compete and always has fun doing so. Currently Douthit plays soccer and football for Miami and appreciates the camaraderie that sports provide in addition to the new challenges they present.
“It’s a unique experience to be able to build good relationships and bonds with your teammates while also competing and pushing each other to be better,” Douthit said.
As the soccer season approaches Douthit is getting ready for the new season. He knows to be successful on the field it’s important to be both mentally and physically prepared.
“Physically, you need to have good footwork, speed and endurance,” Douthit said. “Mentally, you need to have strong focus, confidence, and the ability to think quickly and make decisions under pressure.”
Communication is another skill that Douthit believes is important for success on the field, but is often overlooked.
“In my opinion the most under-appreciated skill a player can have is their ability to effectively communicate with their teammates,” Douthit said. “Communication is key both on and off the field.”
Already in his young career Douthit has found success on the field and he is hoping to accomplish more before his senior year.
“The highlight of my career so far was when our team went to the first round [of state] my freshman year,” Douthit said. “It was a good experience as a young freshman and before graduating I would like to help lead my team to a better playoff run and make it to the state championship.”
Off the field, Douthit works just as hard as he does on the field. To keep himself motivated and inspired, Douthit tries to surround himself with positive and encouraging people who are always working hard to improve themselves as well.
So far, that plan is working out well for Douthit as he prepares for his junior season. As for the future, Douthit plans on furthering his education and football career in college.
