Brenna Boudreaux is in her senior year at Afton High School. She was recently named the captain of the cheer team. While she enjoys cheering, she also enjoys being an example to others and hanging out with her teammates.
“I really like being the captain,” Boudreaux said. “I am able to come to practice and help everyone learn the cheers and spending time with the team and taking selfies. I also enjoy the fact that I can be myself around the team and make everyone laugh.”
Afton cheer sponsor Jennifer Osterberger has lead the team for three season. She says that working with her team is something and seeing them bond and grow is a great feeling.
“I’m not an educational professional,” she stated. “I’m just a proud Afton community member enjoying the honor of serving these amazing young ladies. Our biggest strengths are that we focus on the things we can do, do them to the best of our ability, and strive to treat one another like family. We discuss triumphs in our lives as well as challenges. The goal is to encourage one another & learn valuable life lessons through the sport of Cheer while representing Afton well.”
Senior cheerleader Hailey Miller appreciates everything that goes along with cheering for the Eagles alongside her team.
“Our student section on home games is awesome because they keep us hyped,” she stated. “And for away games, I like the bus rides, listening to music and all singing along. I really like how our squad supports each other even when someone is down and not feeling themself.”
Coach Osterberger says that the chemistry of the team is an important part of success and they do a number of things together to help keep the chemistry strong.
“We gather each summer for a team building afternoon of swimming, relaxing, and dinner,” she said. “That’s always nice. We participate each year in our Afton’s homecoming and Christmas parades. We enjoy any opportunity to represent our community. We enjoy organizing fun pep assemblies and engaging with fans at events.”
Kat Osterberger is another senior on the cheer team and she likes how being on the team gives her an opportunity to be an influence in her school.
“I enjoy being able to positively impact the student body through school spirit,” Kat said. “I like being a part of the team because we encourage and support each other.”
