When Libbi Barton of Afton High School first got involved in FFA, she was in the eighth grade. It was a class she had to take, but admits once she was involved in the activities, she soon realized just how much she enjoyed the class.
“Honestly no one really got me into it but one of my classmates, Torah pushed me to do a lot more in FFA that I never would have by myself. I am very grateful for her,” said Barton.
Barton is now serving as the Treasurer for the FFA chapter at Afton High School and is a crop judge. Being part of the officer team and representing her school is something Barton is proud to do.
Entering her junior year, Barton said there are many things about the FFA she really enjoys, but meeting and making new friends is something that is at the top of her list.
“One thing I enjoy the most is definitely meeting all sorts of new people from all over the state at contests,” said Barton.
Away from FFA you can usually find Barton playing softball for Afton. A starting catcher, Barton can play multiple positions, but admits pitching is not for her.
“I mainly play catcher, but I can pretty much play anywhere in the infield, besides pitcher,” said Barton.
Barton loves playing with her teammates at Afton. Not only is she on the softball team, but she runs track and is on the weightlifting team. Barton is also a member of the Student Council at Afton. With her busy schedule, it leaves little time for other activities.
Barton said her grandmother has been a tremendous influence on her and she is thankful for the lessons she has learned from her.
“My grams was my biggest influence. She knew how to make the best of any situation. She was also one of the most caring people you would ever meet. She didn’t care who you were she hoped to see you succeed in whatever you are doing,” said Barton.
As for her involvement in FFA, Barton said she is excited to get the school year started and she is looking forward to all the FFA events. She did have some advice for anyone wanting to join FFA.
“I would tell them that FFA is a great way to push yourself to do new things. It has really helped me a lot in many ways. Plus, you get to do so many fun things like take trips around the state,” said Barton.
