Ezra Gates is a sophomore at Grove High School and has been having a great season so far wrestling for the Ridgerunners.
So far, Gates has a record of 38-4 and has been competing in the 132 pound weight class this season. For Gates, wrestling has been a lifetime endeavor and he is continuing to follow in the family tradition as competes on the mat for Grove.
“I was four years old when I started wrestling,” Gates said. “My family is a wrestling family. My brother, uncles, and dad all wrestled. But my dad inspired me the most to love the sport.”
While wrestling has come naturally to Gates, he is always working to improve both on and off the mat.
“To be successful in wrestling not only do you have to be committed physically and mentally but making the grind of the sport fun is also important,” Gates said.
One aspect of wrestling that Gates has been trying to focus on this year is his nutrition. He knows that while making weight is important, it’s just as important to feel strong, conditioned, and rested as well.
“Nutrition is something I have really tried to focus on this year,” Gates said. “I’ve figured out fueling my body correctly is just as important as practice. Before big matches and tournaments I focus on getting my mind right and use music to get ready.”
As Gates continues competing this year he wants to stay with the mindset of “No regrets” when it comes to preparation and competition. His goal for the season is simple:
“No matter what, leave your best on the mat and walk off with your chin up,” Gates said.
Outside of wrestling and academics Gates loves the outdoors. In his free time he enjoys hunting, fishing, and racing pit bikes.
