Miami’s Avery Walther – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Welch State Bank

Avery Walther knows how to bring the spirit to high school sporting events.

Avery is a freshman at Miami High School and has been cheering for three years. Growing up, she has always expressed an interest in cheerleading and has wanted to be a cheerleader since she was young.

Avery shared that she decided to start cheering because “she had wanted to for her whole life,” and “middle school was her first real opportunity” to pursue it. Cheering in middle school introduced Avery to a sport that she quickly found a passion for, and she has grown to love it.

Cheering brings a much-needed energy to any high school game or event. For Avery, her favorite thing about cheerleading is getting to cheer at home games, specifically home football games. Cheering at home games is a special experience where an ecstatic energy is felt that cannot be felt anywhere else.

Being a cheerleader has taught Avery many valuable lessons. Like any sport, it is inevitable that hardships and trials will be faced, but Avery has learned that it is vital to “always believe in yourself.” Having confidence is the key to success, and Avery has grown to be confident in her abilities as an athlete.

In cheer, having a strong bond within the team is important to lead the school and keep the morale high. Avery leads her team by working to grow the bond that the team already shares.

“I lead my team by having a positive attitude and always pushing everyone to do their best,” she states. “Creating a positive atmosphere allows everyone to work well together which is important for not just the team but the school too.”

Cheerleading is an important part of Avery’s life, so she offered some words of encouragement to those who may be wanting to pursue cheering like she did when she was young: “Always do your best no matter what.”
